In Normandy, cider making dates back 2,000 years. From the 16th century, the Pays d'Auge cider gained a great reputation thanks to evolving pressing techniques, new Spanish apple varieties and the measures taken by King Charles I of England against the Normandy viticulture. It was also his favorite drink. Due to its quality and uniqueness, it has also been granted French protected designation of origin ("Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée").
