Julius Maggi was born on October 9, 1846 in Frauenfeld, the second of five children of an Italian immigrant and a Swiss woman. During his active youth, he tried several schools, but finished his commercial studies prematurely. He also worked in Budapest for two years in a mill that was considered extremely modern at the time, where he worked his way up to deputy director. Returning home, at the age of 23, he inherited his father's unprofitable mill, which he saved from bankruptcy by introducing new working methods, and soon developed it into a thriving business. The history of the Maggi® brand began then, in 1872. At that time, more and more women were already working, and they had little time left for baking and cooking, while it took hours to prepare even a soup on the wood-burning stove. There were no canteens or buffets in the factories, and lunch breaks were measured in minutes. The consequences did not remain: the health of the workers deteriorated, absenteeism was high, diseases spread and mortality increased. To solve this problem, Julius Maggi started experimenting with easily digestible, cheap and nutritious legumes. In his factory, he prepared raw material mixtures, which he advertised as "one-minute soup". The original Maggi soups were made from legumes with a high protein and starch content and were considered a revolutionary healthy food. After the success, Julius Maggi also launched his food flavoring in 1886; to satisfy the huge demand, he soon had to establish warehouses in London, Paris, Berlin and New York.
