The real history of Unicum goes back to at least 1883 when it was registered as a trademark. The secrecy of the recipe has always been an important marketing element throughout the history of the drink. At the time of nationalization, the family managed to keep the secret so that Béla Zwack handed over a fake recipe to the company managers who took over the factory, so a different Unicum was made in Hungary during the family's emigration.

About the company

The founding of the Zwack factory is attributed to József Zwack, who opened his liqueur factory in Pest in 1840 (according to other sources in 1847) in Marokó-udvar (today's Erzsébet tér) to exploit the economic opportunities due to the change in the rules for distilling spirits. Production quickly picked up and in the catalog of the Budapest National Exhibition of 1855 they already reported a decent industry, the employment of 22 workers and exports of HUF 20,000-30,000. A little later, consumers could also receive feedback on the good quality of the products: Zwack products won two gold medals and several awards at the world exhibitions held between 1880-85. In 1881, they registered their first trademarked liqueur, Kincsem liqueur, named after the wonder horse of the time with no small marketing sense. Two years later, their new Unicum bitter liqueur also came under patent protection.

Product description

Unicum is produced according to the classic methods of quality herbal liqueurs: some of the herbs are soaked in fine spirit (extracted), while others are evaporated after soaking, thus highlighting flavors that would otherwise be suppressed by other substances. Extraction takes an average of 3 weeks. The mixture of drink components extracted from the distillation and extraction processes is placed in barrels and matured for a few weeks, and then it is poured into a production tank, where sugar is added. The raw drink prepared in this way is then poured into oak barrels and matured for about half a year.
