The 8-year-old Lagavulin was released on the occasion of the distillery's 200th anniversary, in a limited number of copies. The distillate, matured for 8 years and bottled with a higher than usual alcohol level, presents the consumer with an excellent, strongly smoky and sweetly spicy character.
Lagavulin is said to be one of the oldest distilleries on Islay and is world famous for its smoky, peaty whisky. It was founded in 1816. Lagavulin is known for the manufacturer's use of slow distillation speed and pear-shaped pot stills.
Alfred Barnard, author of "The Whiskey Distilleries of the United Kingdom", visited the distillery in the 1880s and wrote a description in which he highlighted an excellent 8-year-old variation. This event gave rise to the idea to celebrate the anniversary of the distillery with an 8-year-old whiskey.
