About the company
JG Niederegger GmbH & Co. KG is a marzipan and confectionery company based in Lübeck, Germany. Niederegger was founded by Johann Georg Niederegger (1777–1856) in Lübeck on March 1, 1806. The company is a family-owned limited partnership. Niederegger marzipan, made by "candidates" since the days of the Hanseatic League, is considered 100% marzipan. By the 19th century, marzipan, traditionally the choice of kings and queens, had become increasingly popular among the people of Lübeck. The tradition that Niederegger marzipan contains much less sugar than other marzipan makers started with Johann Georg, who was a student of Maret, another confectioner. Johann Georg left in 1806 to set up his own business, and the products he produced were of such high quality that they were sought after by kings and emperors. In the city center of Lübeck, opposite the town hall, the always crowded Café Niederegger, known as the "confectionery harem", a café, a Niederegger sweet shop, and a marzipan museum await guests on its upper floors. On-site sales of the almond product until the XII. can be traced back to the century.
