It was named after its founder, Simon Rutté, who founded the brewery in Dordrecht in 1872. A classic oude jenever recipe: two-fifths "malt wine" and three-fifths grain spirit are the base, distilled with juniper and 13 other botanical ingredients.

Rutte has a long history; recipes have been passed on from generation to generation. Whereas the industry was looking for cheaper methods and materials during the last century, this ‘innovation’ completely passed by the Rutte family. And that’s a good thing because it means old recipes and craftsmanship have been preserved. Even though the distillery has not been in the hands of the Rutte family since the 1990s, the tradition is kept alive and the company stills follows the same unique distilling process as ancestor Simon did in his days. Simon Rutte settled in Dordrecht around 1830, before moving into the building in the Vriesestraat in 1872, where the distillery and shop still remain, many generations later.
It is clear, with aromas of bread crust, Brazil nuts, overripe bananas, pine and dried apples, with a little pepper and cinnamon in the background. Full-flavored, slightly sweet, reminiscent of juniper, brown bread, baked apples and honey, Brazil nuts and pepper in the company of a little rosemary frame the overall picture. It is characterized by a pleasantly soft, restrained herbal character, the aftertaste is light and clean.
