The Peroni company was founded in 1846 under the founding family name in Vigevano, Italy. Due to the thriving business, a second brewery was built in Rome. The company was moved to Rome by Giovanni Peroni in 1864, six years before Rome became the Italian capital in 1870. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the company became one of the most important breweries in the newly unified Italian nation. In the 1960s and through their expansion, Peroni Nastro Azzurro launched a number of successful advertising campaigns with a strong emphasis on the sea and the world of sailing; each campaign features a model dressed in a sailor suit and hat. By the 1990s, both the Peroni brand and the product line were widespread and well-known worldwide. London brewer giant SABMiller bought the company in 2003, making it one of the few international brands in its portfolio.
