About the company
The original legal predecessor of Absolut vodka was created by businessman Lars Olsson Smith in 1879 in Åhus. Until the 1970s, it was not labeled as vodka, but as Absolut Ren Brännvin ("absolutely pure (burnt) spirit"). It was positioned as a premium international brand in 1979, when it was named Absolut Vodka. In March 2008, the Swedish government sold VS Group to the French company Pernod Ricard.
