About the company

During the Cretaceous period, when almost all of today's Italy lay beneath the seabed, seismic geological shifts began that eventually resulted in the rich mix of soils and rocks found in Casanova di Neri's seven vineyards. Over the following millennia, it shaped the hills of Montalcino and the basins of the Ombrone and Orcia rivers that surround it, creating a soil like the crumbly clay shale known as galestro, on which the Sangiovese grape reaches its best potential. The soil here is also rich in special minerals, such as the precious onyx, which was found in the Pietradonice vineyard on the site of a former quarry. The winery owns 7 wonderful vineyards: Fiesole, Cerretalto, Collalli, Podernuovo, Pietradonice, Giovanni Neri and Cetine.

Product description

Casanova di Neri’s latest wine, which has quickly gained serious recognition, was born from the acquisition of the special Sesta vineyard. True to the company’s philosophy of producing wines only from the best terroirs of Montalcino, they successfully acquired this 7-hectare plot in 2018, featuring over 45-year-old vines. This step was preceded by more than 40 years of friendship with the previous owners, with whom Giovanni Neri jointly planted and cultivated the vines over the decades. Although it is "only" a Rosso, the new star of the Neri family will emerge here in 2023: a Brunello that sets a new standard for quality, expression, and uniqueness. The grapes are referred to as Brunello or "Sangiovese Grosso," as the blend features a medley of dark fruits combined with earthy, brownish notes. The Sangiovese displays its unembellished, juicy, and wild characteristics, showcasing berry fruits, bitter almond, and dried, balsamic herbs in this excellent red wine. The initial wave of aromas is followed by hints of turned earth and delicate spices. The wine is named after Giacomo Neri, Giovanni's father.
